In Honor Of National Sunglasses Day

UV protection for your eyes is essential all year round. Whether sunny or cloudy, UV rays penetrate through cloud cover, which means sunglasses or eyeglasses with UV protection should be worn all year round.

One important factor when it comes to your eyewear is making sure it is 100% UV protected. Be alert when buying sunglasses, as some are not UV-blocking glasses. The dark tint on sunglasses that does not protect from UV rays may allow your pupils to remain large, exposing you to more damage from UV radiation.  If your eyewear doesn’t have this, it’s time to invest in a fresh new pair!

Wondering why it’s so important to protect against UV rays? Short-term exposure can cause photokeratitis, also known as sunburn of the cornea, that can cause permanent damage. The long-term effects are the ones to watch for, as long-term exposure can cause cancer of the eyelid, damage to your cornea and retina, cataracts and early onset macular degeneration. While some of these can be cured, most cannot, and that is why protection with 100% UV ray protected eyewear is a key defense for your eyes.
